Renewals and cancelling

How automatic renewal works, what happens when a payment fails, and how long files are kept after cancelling.

Last updated: 2026-07-21

Your server runs on a subscription. It renews automatically at the end of each billing period until you cancel it.

Automatic renewal

Stripe charges the card you used for the order, on the same day each period. You get an invoice by e-mail every time.

The renewal date is shown in the server header as Expires, and under Billing in the main menu.

If a payment fails

An expired card, insufficient funds or a bank block will all cause a renewal to fail. What happens then:

  1. The server is suspended straight away. It stops and players cannot connect.
  2. Stripe retries the payment over the following days.
  3. A successful retry brings the server straight back, with all data intact.
  4. If nothing succeeds within the retry window, the subscription ends and the service is treated as cancelled.

Nothing is deleted during this period. The suspension is there to stop an unpaid service running, not to punish you — updating your card in Billing and letting the retry go through restores everything.

Suspension is immediate on the first failed attempt. If you know a card is about to expire, replace it before the renewal date rather than after.

Cancelling

Cancel from Billing. The subscription stops renewing, but the server keeps running until the end of the period you already paid for — cancelling on day 3 of a month does not cut you off on day 3.

After the period ends, the server is suspended and the files are kept for 7 days. Within that window everything can be restored by resubscribing. After it, the server and its data are deleted permanently and cannot be recovered.

If your world matters to you, download a copy before cancelling. See Backups.

Changing plan

Changing to a larger or smaller plan does not lose your world. Do it from the panel; the difference is settled on the next invoice.

Moving up is a good answer to a server that keeps running out of memory. Moving down is fine too, but check that your world and mods actually fit in the smaller plan first — a modpack that needs 8 GB will not run on 4.

Changing the payment card

Under Billing. The new card is used from the next renewal onwards.

Worth doing as soon as you get a replacement card, rather than waiting for a failed payment to remind you.

What happens to backups

Backups belong to the service. When a service is deleted, its backups go with it — they are not kept separately and we cannot restore them afterwards.

This is the one thing worth planning for in advance. A copy of your world on your own computer costs nothing and survives anything.
